Vintage 35mm Slides Part 1

When I took a trip down to seattle to see BJM, my friends and I took detour to an antiques store where I found a bunch of vintage 35mm slides from the 60s. As soon as I returned home I scanned a box of 60 slides with my Canoscan 9000F Film Scanner. Surprisingly, the slides were only 5 dollars.

It seems as if they are from an older couple who travelled along the West Coast in a camper. Some of the slides are labelled with locations along Washingtion State and British Columbia.

If you’d like and if it’s your thing, with your mouse hover over the picture to read my commentary. Certain photos are just darling!

Part 2 to come soon! Stay tuned!

St. Patrick’s Day

Yeah, come at me! This is a day late but I do what I want!

Oh God, this never gets old

Anyway, I have to say that I am NOT a big St. Patrick’s Day fan. I think it might have to do with everyone suddenly becoming Irish… or the fact that it’s a Catholic holiday. Regardless, sitting at home with a beer to celebrate the man who eradicated ‘snakes’ from Ireland is a lot more fun than a pub filled with Surrey’s finest.

But today is the day after, where all those who celebrated into the wee hours o’ the morn are now nursing a Republic-sized headache of Guinness and Jameson. This means that I can now revel in some Irishness with a movie marathon of films about the Irish without starring any Irish-born actors!
Oh Hollywood, you sexist racist son-of-a-gun!

First up is The Boxer
The only thing you need to know about this 1997 film is that is stars a young Daniel Day-Lewis and features an amazing haircut (opinion coming from an amateur barber here)

Ugh, I cannot find a picture that fully glamourizes this typical ’90s style, but the back has these subtle ‘steps’ cut in and the temples are shaved leaving about an inch and a half length on the crown. Now I need to find a willing participant to help me actualize this…

Next is the movie Hunger
The only thing you need to know about this 2008 film is that supposed woman-beater Michael Fassbender plays Bobby Sands and goes the Christian Bale ‘skinny-for-a-movie’ route. Politics aside, this movie made me cry and any movie that makes me cry inhabits a soft squishy place in my cold black Thatcher-like heart.

Lastly is the movie Breakfast on Pluto
This 2005 movie actually stars an Irish-born actor – Cillian Murphy. The only thing you need to know about this film is that he is amazing and makes one beautiful woman.

Ta-ta for now!

Walmart is Expensive…

After learning my lessons from past experiences, I finally developed my first batch of photos from the Minolta Hi-Matic AF2 picked up from Value Village. Turns out almost every photo is blurry. Either that, or they are over exposed. Or didn’t even make my cut.

Understandably, the self-timed pictures are blurry but the others… my only explanation so far is that my hands are unsteady. I have also read that Minoltas have difficulty focusing on any subject in the distance. Oh well… must do some more sleuthing to figure out the problem… or pick up another camera…

Going Away

As a going away present from my place of work for over the past 2 and a half years, my coworkers bought me a Holga 135 camera. It was such a thoughtful gift! Already in my repertoire is the Holga 120, but it is a bit expensive for film and development… Anyway, out of 36 pictures only 14 worked out and that’s because when it isn’t extremely sunny outside, you need to use the flash attachment! Not even the blaring neon lights of a restaurant kitchen is enough to illuminate the photo.

On to the pictures! The ones that did turn out were, understandably, taken outside in the sun. Most of them are just of my best friend and I fooling around on a playground. As this was my first roll on the camera, I was playing with the focus and multiple exposures to see what would work. The focus didn’t make much of a difference, but the photos which were exposed mutliple times turned out pretty cool. Also, this was done on Redscale XR Negative 35mm film 50-200.
